How We Started Caring About Plants

This wasn't supposed to be a business. It started with one struggling fiddle leaf fig and a neighbor who needed help. But sometimes the things that matter most come from unexpected places.

The Apartment That Changed Everything

My apartment was filled with plants I barely understood. Some thrived, others died mysteriously. When my neighbor Rashida asked why her orchid kept dropping flowers, I realized I wasn't the only one struggling. We spent an afternoon troubleshooting her watering schedule.

Word spread faster than I expected. Soon I was visiting apartments across Baku, helping people figure out why their plants weren't happy. No formal structure, just showing up with a notebook and genuine curiosity.

The turning moment: A client called me crying because her grandmother's jasmine plant was dying. We saved it. That's when I understood this work mattered beyond aesthetics.

Why I Started This

People ask me how I went from crunching numbers to talking about soil pH. The truth? I was terrible with plants. Genuinely awful. I killed succulents, which supposedly "anyone can grow." My apartment looked like a plant graveyard.

But I'm stubborn. I started researching obsessively—reading forums at midnight, watching videos, taking notes like I was studying for exams. Slowly, things clicked. The problem wasn't that I lacked a green thumb. I just didn't understand what each plant actually needed.

Most people don't need complex advice. They need someone to explain why their routine isn't working for their specific situation. That realization changed how I approach every consultation.

By 2021, I was visiting three or four homes weekly. Friends started calling me "the plant lady," which felt both accurate and slightly embarrassing. But when someone tells you their home feels different because their plants are finally thriving—that's when you realize you've stumbled onto something worth pursuing properly.

Polentra Tromila became official in early 2022. The name comes from an inside joke with Rashida about how dramatic plants can be. We needed something that sounded professional but reminded us not to take ourselves too seriously.

Building Something Real

Turning casual consultations into an actual service meant learning business skills I didn't have. Scheduling, pricing, client management—all new territory. I made plenty of mistakes. Undercharged for months. Double-booked appointments. Forgot to follow up with people.

But the work itself felt right. Clients started referring friends. I developed systems for diagnosing common problems. Created care guides specific to Baku's climate. Started recognizing patterns across different homes and plant types.

What we learned: Every home is different. Cookie-cutter advice doesn't work. The best consultations happen when we take time to understand someone's actual routine and space.

Where We're Growing Next

Three years in, we're still figuring things out. But we know what matters: helping people feel confident caring for their plants without drowning them in jargon or unnecessary products.

Our focus for 2025 and beyond stays simple. We want to reach more people who feel frustrated with their plants. We're developing clearer resources for common problems. And we're exploring ways to support local plant communities without losing the personal touch that started this whole thing.
